THE IRON GUARD

JIANU DANIELEANU GIVES AN INSIGHT INTO THE PRE-WAR RUMANIAN NATIONALIST MOVEMENT

The following interview with Jianu Danielenau, an officer of the pre-war Iron Guard, was recently conducted for the interests of our readership. We hope that it will stimulate greater interest in Codreanu’s work.

N.N. -Can you give us some sort of idea of the conditions in Rumania that gave rise to the foundation of the Iron Guard?

J.D. -These conditions predated the Iron Guard, which was but a development stage, by about 11 years. We are talking here about a current, a movement whose origins go back to the 1919-20 years. A chaotic situation had been created by the psychosis of a Bolshevik revolution next door. Red infiltrators under the leadership of the Jews and the Jewish press incited our working masses and sowed the seeds of anarchy amongst them.The peasantry, opposed by instinct to this trend for revolution, was disorganised and leaderless, unable to respond. The educated citizenry was vacillating, the State apparatus spineless. Communist invasion was felt to be imminent. But a handful of high school students, headed by Codreanu, acted. Codreanu thus started on his Golgotha in the Spring of 1919. This small but determined move was to lead later, through many trials, tribulations, and imprisonments for him and his band, to the founding of The Legion of Michael the Archangel, and later, the Iron Guard. The appellation ‘Iron Guard’ came into being in 1930 to designate the political arm of the Legion.

N.N. -Could you tell us why you joined the Legionary Movement and what has kept you active on its behalf ever since?

J.D. -The innermost folds of my soul drew me irresistibly to it. I sensed intuitively that the Legionary Movement was, at long last, the organisation really meaning to clean the stables of the political pestilence fouling up the country; to do away with the corruption and moral decadence of the body politic; to end the exploitation of the long suffering peasantry and improve the lot of the worker. And I have stuck to the same faith in these endeavours for I have believed the Legionary Movement to be one of a spiritual regeneration gifted by God to a people perhaps once in a millennium through its predestined leader, Comeliu Z. Codreanu, the “Captain.”

Apart from the stalinist drive to destroy the independent peasantry, the peasants were subjected to special persecution not only because they exerted charity, or were suspected of being capable of charity towards the partisans, but also merely because they held religious beliefs (hence, “subversive” with respect to the newly installed communist system). On March 10, 1949, the armed forces of the MIA (Ministry of the Internal Affairs), including heavy artillery troops, descended upon the village of Fundul Racaciunii, in Moldavia: they demolished the church; tortured the village schoolmaster Anton Benchea in front of his wife and children until his body was mangled and then slain; the women who had fled the woods with their children were run down and arrested, together with their husbands (after a week of beatings they were released, bleeding and disfigured). On March 15, the same procedure was applied to the village of Faraoani, in Moldavia. Secret police troops killed Ioan Farcas, the village cantor, by throwing him from the height of the bell tower. They seized four priests, Ion Butnaru, Anton Damec, Petre Dinca and Anton Olaru, together with their congregation, beat them up, bound them in heavy iron chains and threw them into the deep winter snow to freeze there. Only one, 80 years-old Anton Ciceu, was not chained and thrown into the snow to freeze but was let loose and told to go home, only to be shot to death in the back with machine-guns as soon as he started walking. Victorious in this battle, the MIA troops then arrested from the remaining villagers enough to fill the trucks they had driven up in, and took them to political imprisonment in Bacau. The direct methods resorted by this “government of workers and peasants” were arrest, killing, beating and torture. Nicolae Ceausescu and Constantin Doncea led a team among whose members were Dorobantu, Badea, Bizin, Moraru, all of whom were promoted to the rank of officers in MIA. They had absolute power and were past putting on a show of legality over their brutality and absolute inhumanity. They murdered Gheorghe Mihai, attorney-at-law, and Tica Popescu, a school teacher, during “questionings”, right in the office of the Chief of the Tribunal of Pitesti. Frequently, secret police officers provoked the citizens to respond to mistreatment, so as to be “justified” in beating up and murdering their victims. Incidents of this type happened in Leicesti, Badesti, Stalpeni, in Muscel County, and in Cumpana and Costesti in Arges County. Under those circumstances, many peasants fled to the mountains. On the southern slopes of the Fagaras Mountains, General Gheorghe Arsenescu was organizing a group of partisans, aided by Petre and Toma Arnautoiu. General Arsenescu led the partisans until 1952, when he went into hiding. He lived in hiding until 1960, when he was captured and killed.

Biserica satului Tămășești începută inițial la 22 Iulie 1935 de 7 legionari și terminată “după o muncă de 3 ani, 3 luni și 24 zile”, în ziua de 14 Oct. 1937. În fața acesteia, a fost înălțată și o frumoasă troiță inscripționată “în cinstea eroilor Ion Moța și Vasile Marin căzuți pe câmpul de luptă la 13 Ianuarie 1937”. Astăzi, numele celor doi este șters de pe troiță, rămânând doar cu dedicația “în cinstea eroilor căzuți pe câmpul de luptă”.

Cunoscută și sub numele de “Biserica Legionarilor din Tămășești”…

Construită din cărămidă groasă, iar ca plan în formă de cruce, biserica are trei turle, unul dintre acestea impresionând prin cupola foarte înaltă, sub formă de turn. Prin arhitectura deosebită, se impune drept unul dintre cele mai frumoase așezăminte din partea locului.

Relatam într’o postare anterioară despre necesitatea inventarierii minuțioase a monumentelor din jud. Hunedoara, concluzie expusă de harnicul cercetător științific Dr. Daniel I. Iancu de la Secția de Istorie și Artă din cadrul Muzeului Civilizației Dacice și Romane Deva, într’un articol apărut mai de mult pe această temă în presa hunedoreană. Cu toată bunăvoința autorului, ne explicam și scepticismul în privința unui astfel de demers natural, având la origine condițiile politice actuale (acutizate și de legea apărută în anul 2015 de interzicere a Mișcării Legionare), cum și eventualele dificultăți care ar sta în fața unei astfel de cercetări, oricât de onestă s’ar dori ea.

Ne referim la acele monumente construite cu mari sacrificii din râvna și devotamentul naționalist desăvârșit al legionarilor în cuprinsul județului Hunedoara, care au supraviețuit distrugerii (ce-i drept, au rămas puține la număr), care nu au fost reabilitate, iar autorii lor rămași necunoscuți prin lipsa oricăror alte referințe documentare, obliterate de totalitarismele din trecut opuse Mișcării Legionare: cel al carlismului, al guvernării antonesciene sau comunismului sanguinar.

De-a lungul ultimilor 35 de ani care au trecut de la evenimentele din Decembrie ’89, guvernele care s’au scurs la conducerea României au afișat în permanență ostilitatea față de păstrarea vie a memoriei celor care s’au jertfit, iar în cazul Mișcării Legionare a adoptat cele mai drastice măsuri de ostracizare și chiar de reprimare.

În ziarul “Glasul Hunedoarei” cu data de 18 Octombrie 2018, într’un articol intitulat “Pro memoria. Monumentele “cu vultur”…, muzeograful Dr. Daniel I. Iancu de la Secția de Istorie și Artă din cadrul Muzeului Civilizației Dacice și Romane Deva, remarca nedumerit despre neglijența în inventarierea monumentelor răspândite pe teritoriul județului Hunedoara. Subscriem, desigur, acestei inițiative de cunoaștere a adevărului, cu rezerva doar că în actualele circumstanțe politice, despre multe din aceste monumente nu se poate vorbi onest. Condițiile actuale de prohibire pot duce la numeroase dificultăți din partea autorităților, pornite să șteargă orice urmă de “legionarism” din ceea ce s’a mai păstrat în teritoriu de sub securea distrugerii. Iată, mai jos, câteva din observațiile judicioase exprimate de Dr. Daniel Iancu:

“Am mai scris și am mai vorbit în ultimii ani despre tipologia monumentelor de eroi din județul Hunedoara. Demersul pentru inventarierea, clasarea pe categorii, elaborarea de fișe sintetice sau tabele sinoptice (care să cuprindă spre exemplu numele inițiatorilor, al susținătorilor materiali, al arhitecților, anul dezvelirii, materialele de construcție, dimensiuni, asemănări și deosebiri, elemente ornamentale sau decorațiuni specifice etc.), este un prim pas pentru păstrarea vie a memoriei eroilor care s-au jertfit în timpul celor două războaie mondiale”…

Venim în întâmpinarea demersului de cunoaștere și “păstrarea vie a memoriei” lor, completând în măsura posibilului lipsa datelor, cum ar fi cea a monumentului de față dezvelit în anul 1936, pe care autorul ni-l descrie mai jos:

Barack Obama ăsta chiar avea șarm! Mai ales când vorbea de “echitate”, “diversitate” (cu secretara), “integrare” (soția), demolări de statui ale “rasiștilor” albi (alea trase jos cu frânghia – o spunem pentru cei cu mințile mai ample care-și aduc aminte), sau alte bazaconii de importanță… socială.

Acum, ne plângem că nu mai sunt statui în America! Cum adică, nu mai sunt?

Ăsta, Barack, ca să înțelegeți odată și pentru totdeauna, a luat premiul Nobel pentru “eforturi extraordinare”. Reprezintă ceva, nu? Ce-i drept, mult mai complex este Joe Biden^*) care, singur a reușit să se înscrie în tabăra de vară pentru copii din acest an, un fapt la fel de extraordinar care ar merita la rândul lui – sine die – premiul Nobel. Păi, se compară? Ăsta e, într’adevăr, un efort demn de luat în seamă și de apreciat pentru un premiu atât de râvnit. În plus, Joe este singurul care, cu o gândire robustă, clarviziune inconfundabilă, coerență și energie indisputabilă (vezi cazul “Bicicleta” și “Scările, scările dom’ Președinte”), calități morale ireproșabile și educaționale drept cap de familie (cazul “Fiul meu rătăcitor Hunter”), s’a impus pe plan mondial (vezi “Ucraina azi” și “Gaza”) drept conducătorul absolut și desăvârșit al lumii libere.

    Așadar, lăsați micile ranchiune: ăsta merită neapărat să fie reales președinte; are doxă!

    Băgați la tărtăcuță și nu vă mai zgâiți la poză, că vin alegerile și trebuie să-i înălțăm statuie!

– Candidatul Partidului Democrat la alegerile prezidențiale din acest an.

Sosit din Italia în România pentru un scurt răgaz, mă aflam spre mijlocul lunii Mai în București, într’un Uber obișnuit care să mă transporte la locul destinației ce-o aveam în plan. Într’un fel, șoferul mă ghicise de la’nceput că sunt cumva “străin”, flerul comun atașat profesiei nu putea fi dezmințit nici în cazul de față. Fire naturală (deși puțin reținut), comenta afabil despre greutățile vieții și problemele societății românești în genere, cu reproșuri la adresa conducătorilor politici ai României care “nu se mai satură”.

După mai mulți ani în Anglia unde s’a îndeletnicit cu toate muncile de povară, câștigând cu sudoare fiecare bănuț, omul nostru s’a întors la familie, bucuros că a putut strânge în ani de lacrimi și durere pentru viitorul familiei sale. Arhitect de profesie după cum mi-a mărturisit, a revenit în țară cu speranța că își “salvează familia”, cum și soluționarea ultimelor dividente acumulate. Acum, deși lucra la o firmă de specialitate în domeniul său, pentru a face față nevoilor curente, era silit să se desfășoare peste programul obișnuit într’o nouă meserie, aceea de șofer Uber. Ajunși în fața vechiului Tribunal de pe malul Dâmboviței, îmi șoptește cu voce scăzută: “ – Nu avem Justiție domnule!… Nici un fel de Justiție!… N’avem!…”

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, UN ORAȘ DESPUIAT DE ISTORIE…

Oare ce s’ar întâmpla dacă Statuia Aviatorilor, Arcul de Triumf, statuile lui Mihai Viteazul, Cuza, Kogălniceanu, Eminescu sau Spiru Haret din București vor fi distruse, așa cum s’a petrecut în ultimii ani în Richmond, fosta capitală a Statelor Confederate, unde toate monumentele au fost puse la pământ? Ce răspuns veți avea la smârcurile de iarbă decrelată ce vor acoperi locul acestor monumente de valoare inestimabilă, martore în timp ale istoriei? Cum veți caracteriza un act atât de barbar și primitiv al unei minorități care v’ar distruge cultura și istoria prin forța intimidării și mijloace primitive care pur și simplu nu pot fi descrise? Cum? Ce atitudine veți lua în fața unei alternative atât de monstruoase?
Poate că povestea de față va fi o lecție bună pentru unii și sperăm că vor putea învăța ceva din ea…
Este povestea tragică a orașului Richmond și, cu siguranță, nimeni nu vrea ca ea să se repete și să devină povestea orașelor lor…
Dar povestea orașului Richmond nu este doar una singulară, a ceea ce s’a întâmplat într’un singur oraș din America; este o poveste multiplicată la scară națională, în alte orașe, sate și așa mai departe, cimitire sau locuri în care zeci de mii de simboluri sudice au fost distruse și profanate de mișcarea de stânga atee care a făcut atâtea nenorociri în ultimul timp.
De aceea, mai mult ca oricând, nu lăsați ca moștenirea strămoșilor să fie distrusă și terfelită de progresismul actual! Pentru că, dacă nu vom fi apărătorii valorilor moștenite de la strămoșii noștri, ne vom trezi într’un uriaș hău al istoriei, într’un gol care ne va înconjura conștiința, dezbrăcați și de Adevăr, dar și de Libertate…

What do you think it would happen if the Statue of Aviators, the Arc de Triomphe, the statues of Michael the Brave, Cuza, Kogalniceanu, Eminescu or Spiru Haret in Bucharest were destroyed, as it has happened in recent years in Richmond, the former capital of the Confederate States, where all the monuments have been thrown to the ground? What would you say and how would you react to see that bushes and grass replaced these monuments of inestimable value representing a valuable page of past history? What’s the answer that you’ll would have? How would you characterize such a barbaric and primitive act of a minority that destroys your culture and history through the force of intimidation and all uncivilized means that simply cannot be described? How? What attitude will you take in the face of such a monstrous alternative?

Perhaps this will be a good lesson for some and hopefully they will be able to learn something from it…

It is the tragic story of the city of Richmond; certainly, no one wants this story to repeat itself and become the story of their cities…

But the story of the city of Richmond is not just a singular story of what happened in just one city in America; it is a story multiplied on a national scale, in other cities, villages, and so on, cemeteries or places where tens of thousands of southern symbols were destroyed and desecrated by the atheist left movement that caused so many horrors lately.

Therefore, do not let the legacy of our ancestors be desecrated and destroyed by the current progressivism! Because if we will not be the defenders of values inherited from our ancestors, we will wake up in a huge void of history, in a void that will surround our consciousness, without Truth, but also without Freedom…

In spite of the repeated surveys that shows that the majority of Virginia’s population opposed the destruction of monuments in no less than nine (9) referendums (citizens overwhelmingly voting to maintain Confederate memorials from the state of Virginia and its capital, Richmond), the people from the leadership (elected to supervise and defend the well being of the city), they had changed all of a sudden their opinion in favor of the so called new „social justice”. Encouraged by the few hundred extremist vandals and anarchists, the city’s leadership gave shamelessly rein free to the lawlessness and acts of desecration, final scenario of the destruction of Confederate monuments. We remind only in parenthesis that the proportion of whites in the state of Virginia is approx. 64.95 %, while African Americans (the black people) constitute about 19.01 %, as shown by recent statistics concerning the state of Virginia (2022), the rest being a conglomerate of other races: hispanics, latins and asians.

For the city of Richmond that we are mentioning, the latest demographic data indicate that the proportion of whites is 57%, compared to that of blacks representing approx. 28%, the rest representing other races.
